How and why aircraft cabins are pressurized? chat-bubble chat-bubble chat-bubble chat-bubble chat-bubble chat-bubble Group 3 Copy Group 3 Copy Group 3 Copy Group 3 Copy Icon-like Icon-like chat-bubble

Whenever passengers choose to fly and are picking their travel itineraries, the attractiveness of an airline offer relies on four main pillars: price, travel time, loyalty benefits and, of course, comfort. While the seating arrangement on board, including the type of seats a carrier has chosen to fit its aircraft with matters a lot, cabin pressurization is essential to ensure passenger comfort and safety. After all, travelers would not be very comfortable if due to the lack of oxygen they would pass out mid-flight. Aircraft cruise at the altitude range of anywhere between 35,000 and 42,000 feet, as the altitude lets pilots avoid bad weather down low and any potential landscape obstacles. Furthermore, aircraft are much more efficient at that altitude: as it increases, the higher the plane is, the thinner the air, which reduces drag and in turn, increases the fuel efficiency. Whenever an aircraft climbs and reaches its cruise altitude, the atmospheric pressure drops down to about four Pounds per square inch (psi), while the pressure on board remains at about 11 psi, simulating the atmosphere of around 8,000 feet inside the aircraft. While theoretically the pressure inside the airc...

Photos show the inside of Élysée Palace, the French White House

Though France is known for its decadent landmarks, the presidential mansion dwarfs many of the country’s other iconic sites in design and power.  The Élysée Palace, which is larger than the White House and the Palace of Versailles, has served as a lavish symbol of official power and diplomacy since 1873.  See inside the massive historic landmark that isn’t as easily accessible as the nearby Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triomphe.  Mollet originally built the Hôtel d’Evreux for French nobleman Louis Henri de la Tour d’Auvergne, Count of Évreux. The Marquise de Pompadour then occupied the palace before bequeathing it to King Louis XV upon her death in 1764. In the following years, the palace was a center for high society gatherings and was named Élysée in accordance with the nearby boulevard in 1797. Emperor of France Napoleon Bonaparte bought the palace in 1808 and named it the Élysée-Napoleon. After the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon returned to Paris and completed his abdication of the in the Élysée Palace on June 22, 1815. Angelique Chrisafis, Paris bureau chief for The Guardian, described her visit to the palace as feeling “shut away from real life.̶...

The latest version of Specialized’s Diverge Comp E5 is a very capable gravel racer that works

The latest version of Specialized’s Diverge Comp E5 is a very capable gravel racer that works well on the road too. It’s fun to ride thanks to a quality frameset and sorted geometry, and the Future Shock tames the bumps for a smooth route across the trails. Last year I rode the entry-level carbon fibre model Diverge, which has been discontinued for 2020, and a lot of what I said in that review holds true here for this Comp E5 model. After all, they share the same geometry, and both come with the same Future Shock damping system, plus there is very little to really differentiate between the ride quality of the carbon fibre frame and the aluminium alloy one. Specialized makes very good alloy frames, you see. Its Allez Sprint Comp is one of the best examples out there, with a great balance of stiffness and comfort – something the Diverge also delivers on, with the added bonus of larger quality tyres and that Future Shock. The geometry of the Diverge is more similar to that found on an endurance road bike than the majority of gravel bikes on the market. With a 72.5-degree head angle (56cm model), a 73.5-degree seat angle and a short 1,011mm wheelbase, this is an aggres...

Two truck drivers who attempted to smuggle more than 1.5 million cigarettes into the UK hidden

Two truck drivers who attempted to smuggle more than 1.5 million cigarettes into the UK hidden between bags of wood pellets, have been sent to prison following an HMRC investigation. Marin Vasilev, 40, of Willingham, Cambridge, was caught attempting to bring the cigarettes, worth £444,641 in unpaid duty, into the UK on 1 May 2018. Border Force officials stopped him at the Port of Dover and found the cigarettes in his HGV. Vasilev was arrested, the cigarettes seized, and the case referred to HMRC. Venelin Nikolov, 45, from Sofia, Bulgaria, was traced two months later in connection with the seizure. Despite both men denying knowing each other, officers discovered they had swapped trailers on their way to the UK from Bulgaria. The pair pleaded guilty to the fraudulent evasion of excise duty at Maidstone Crown Court and were both sentenced to 18 months in prison. Paul Morgan, director of Border Force South East and Europe, said: “The size of the detection made by Border Force officers should leave people in no doubt that tobacco smuggling is worth big money to the criminals involved. Nexar Beam Dash Cam review: Simple and accessible dash cam for everyone

I’ve been driving for over a little over a decade now (yes, I’m a youngin’, I know), but I’ve seen my fair share of stupid and crazy drivers here in Southern California. But you don’t just see outrageous drivers in Southern California — they’re everywhere, even where you live. While we usually depend on insurance policies to cover our butt in case of an accident, sometimes it’s not enough. Or perhaps you only want proof of the insane things you see on the road every day. One of the wisest investments anyone can get for their car is a dash cam. Not only will it help prove that you’re in the right in case of an accident and the other party tries to pin it on you, but you can capture any other incidents that you see on the road. And hey, sometimes it’s just fun to share the idiocy you see on your drives with friends and family. The Nexar Beam is a sleek and compact dash cam that even connects to your smartphone, making accessing footage easier than ever before. Bottom line: The Nexar Beam is small and compact enough to fit inconspicuously behind your rearview mirror. It only takes five minutes to set up and has crisp and clear ...

LEDs are rapidly taking over the world of lighting. Thanks goodness. Amazingly efficient, they are especially

LEDs are rapidly taking over the world of lighting. Thanks goodness. Amazingly efficient, they are especially suited to portable applications. And that brings us to Ledlenser, which dominates the quality end of the flashlight market. Here we’re looking at the Ledlenser MH11, a smart headlamp. A headlamp is a portable, battery-powered torch designed to be worn on your head. It allows you to work or walk in the dark, while leaving your hands free. The Ledlenser take on that basic scheme adds the following: The body of the headlamp is fairly wide – around 90mm – and moderately deep at 60mm from the forehead rest to the front of the lens housing. That might suggest a tendency to tug down and forwards, but that proved not to be the case. Wide elastics traps – 26mm wide – hold the assembly on your head. I liked the material. It was soft on my skin and held everything firmly, without ever feeling uncomfortably tight. The weight is back-loaded, with the battery near the rear. The forehead plate has a soft rubbery ring around it. At nearly 70mm by 50mm, it spreads the load well. The Lenlenser MH11 body can swivel up and down freely within that, but again is tight enough not to droop. It ...

US releases list of products from China that could face more tariffs

The United States Trade Representative office released a proposed list of products imported from China that could face more tariffs. The proposed list covers about 1,300 individual tariffs in aerospace, information and communication technology, robotics, and machinery. In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce said that it strongly condemns and firmly opposes the U.S. tariff proposals and is ready to take reciprocal measures on U.S. products. The Chinese Embassy in the United States also released a statement that said the USTR action has “gravely violated” the World Trade Organization. “It serves neither China’s interest, nor U.S. interest, even less the interest of the global economy,” the statement said. “As the Chinese saying goes, it is only polite to reciprocate. The Chinese side will resort to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism and take corresponding measures of equal scale and strength against U.S. products in accordance with Chinese law. We hope that the U.S. side, with sense and the long-term view in mind, refrain from going further down the wrong path.” The proposal will face an official public comment period, including a hearing, the statement said. Following this ...
